Only 2% of Americans have advance directives on file with their physician. That means 98% of those facing life threatening or terminal conditions through accident or illness lose control of medical decisions should they become unable to speak for themselves.

Every year, thousands end up in nursing homes in a vegetative state, an outcome they would never have chosen. After family funds are exhausted, Medicaid takes over, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

Without an advance directive, employee health plans incur costs of $100,000 and more for unwanted and often futile medical procedures as physician and families struggle to determine the right course of action. End-of-life care is a major contributor to the double digit increases in the cost of employee health plans.

Only the patient can make decisions regarding their health care options.

When the patient's wishes are unknown, physicians are ethically bound to use all available means to keep the patient alive irrespective of outcome. However, the outcome can readily be something the patient would never have wanted.

My Life PreferencesMLP) is designed for individuals who are in the active workforce. Personnel often have clear views of what outcomes they want for themselves, but delay writing directives because of cost concerns and many other factors. MLP makes it easier for users to express their thoughts and wishes by employing many features not found in standard advance directives/living wills. My Life Preferences is a "state of the art" approach accepted within the field of bioethics as a best practice standard.

How employees and their families benefit from using My Life Preferences

  1. Employees readily purchase life insurance as a way of caring for their loved ones should something happen to them.
  2. Advanced medical technology has resulted in a paradoxical effect. It decreases the probability of death while increasing the chances of surviving with a permanent disability. The family of a permanently and totally disabled individual cannot receive death benefits. In addition, to losing a source of income and health care benefits, they take on physical and financial responsibilities. Breadwinners who are mindful of this possibility much prefer setting their own parameters of when to "let go, let God."
  3. The choices one makes in an advance directive are obviously very personal. The only "right" answer is what users considers best for them and their families.
  4. A clear advance directive spares both physician and family the agonized and often guilt-ridden debate of trying to determine patient wants. Physicians and families are less compelled to undertake every conceivable last-ditch effort when they know the result would be exactly what the patient would not want.
  5. Advance directives empower families. When families know their loved one’s wants, they can direct their energy toward meeting those wants. They go from feeling helpless to becoming active helpers. This is a profound emotional shift. While the pain of loss will not go away, it is softened by having been a helper to the end.
  6. Studies have shown that individuals provided hospice care live about as long as those who spend their last days in a hospital under active treatment. Hospice care allows patients to share precious moments with family and friends in the familiar surroundings of their home, be at peace and free of pain.
